If you’ve ever asked me about a reading, you’ve heard me say it: get an accurate birth time. Go find your birth certificate. This conversation comes up with practically every prospective client, and there’s a real mechanical reason behind my nagging. So let’s build a chart from scratch and I’ll show you exactly where a fuzzy birth time breaks things. What a birth chart actually is
A birth chart is a pictorial representation of where the celestial bodies were at the exact moment of your birth, from the exact place of your birth. (The same logic powers horary astrology, where the chart is cast for the moment a question is asked, the moment the question is birthed into the world. Different tool, same principle: precise moments matter.)
Because your chart depends on your exact time and place, it’s unique to you. Nobody else has it. Not even a twin: I’ve read charts for a set of twins born one minute apart, and their charts were similar overall but not the same. The degrees had already shifted. You are one of a kind, provably, in writing. Lean into that.
How the chart gets built
Step one is location. Your birthplace gives the astrologer (or the software) your meridian line, and if you’re flashing back to fifth grade geography and the prime meridian, yes, that’s the idea. The meridian lets us put a stake in the chart: the midheaven, or Medium Coeli, abbreviated MC. The middle of the sky above where you were born. Knowing your midheaven alone already says a lot about you.
Step two is time. Location plus time gives us the ascendant degree: the exact degree of the zodiac that was rising over the local horizon at the moment you were born. If you know your “big three” (sun, moon, rising), this is where the rising sign comes from. The ascendant tells us what type of person you are, what motivates you, and how you present to the world.
Where the wheels come off without a time
Here’s the mechanical problem. The ascendant moves one degree every four minutes. Not per day. Per four minutes.
In the chart I walk through in the video, the ascendant sits at 29 degrees of Aquarius, the very last arc minutes of the sign. Move the clock forward just two minutes and that person becomes a Pisces rising. A very different person, two minutes later. If your recorded birth time is off by even a little, your whole presentation-to-the-world layer can land in the wrong sign.
And it’s bigger than the ascendant. Every planet in your chart sits at a specific degree, and interpretation isn’t just “planet in sign.” It’s the aspects, the degree-based relationships between planets. The outer planets crawl, but the inner ones move fast, and the Moon changes signs roughly every two and a half days. A wrong birth time means a wrong Moon degree, which throws off the aspects, which throws off the reading. This holds regardless of what type of astrology you practice. The degrees are the data.
Without a birth time, there’s no ascendant, no houses, no reliable Moon degree. You’re reading the book with chapters missing.
So go get the birth certificate
The fix is boring and worth it: request the good long-form birth certificate from the county where you were born. (That’s the US process; not every country or era recorded times, so if it truly doesn’t exist, it doesn’t exist, and astrologers have workarounds.) But if it’s sitting in a records office for the price of a small fee? Stop being cheap. Go get it.
And know this: when you show up to a reading with a big beautiful exact birth time, an 8:37, a 2:35, I’m just going to love you for it. You’ll be my new favorite client.
