If you’re looking for love and want to see how it shows up in your chart, stop worrying about sign compatibility. It’s kind of BS, a little bit. Romantic partnership lives in specific places in the birth chart, and today I’m walking you through all of them.
Start with you
Before you go hunting for bae in the chart, you need to know who you are, in astrology as in life. So we start with the ascendant (what’s your environment like?), then the chart ruler: what’s it doing, what sign and house is it in, what aspects is it making. I’ve covered all of that in the first house post, so do your self-examination there first. I’ll wait.
The 7th house: partners and known enemies
The 7th house covers marriage and really all forms of partnership: your spouse, your lover, your business partners and the legal contracts that come with them. It’s also, interestingly, the house of known enemies.
Let’s pause on that. Is it not ironic that your house of partnership is also the house of known enemies? It actually makes sense: partnership is antagonistic to us as individuals. Being in a love relationship means stepping outside of yourself, out of your first house of self, across the chart into the 7th. That’s a risk. Maybe you get somebody who gives as much as you give. Maybe you don’t. You can control your own actions and you can’t control your partner’s, so if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to take the risk.
Planets living in the 7th
Planets in the 7th house describe your day-to-day experience of partnership.
Take Saturn. Saturn in the 7th can bring toils and snares, because Saturn is the planet of delays, restrictions, and lessons learned. Delays in love, restrictions in love, lessons learned in love. But Saturn also governs old things, so it can bring a love that lasts, a practical, tried-and-tested love, or a partner who’s older than you. It’s not all negative.
Mars in the 7th? Mars will come for your throat. It can bring quarreling in relationships, and at the extreme, actual abuse. It can also bring passion. Mars in the 7th might just bring somebody who argues with their partner for the makeup sex. Every planet has facets, and if multiple planets sit in the house, they complicate each other, so read them together.
The ruler of the 7th, aka bae themself
Now find the cusp of your 7th house, note the sign there, and find the planet that rules that sign. That planet represents your partner in the chart. That’s them.
Where the ruler lives tells you where and how partnership finds you. Seventh house ruler in the 9th house of higher education, foreign travel, and religion? Maybe you meet your person overseas, in college, or at church. Check whether the planet likes the sign and house it’s in, what aspects it makes, and, importantly, what other houses it rules. If your 7th house ruler also rules your house of hidden enemies, take that into account. Maybe they don’t have your best interest at heart. Or maybe they just work in laboratories and hidden places. I’m trying to be nice about the 12th house here; it’s typically a malefic house with some genuinely bright sides, and we’ll go into it another day.
Venus, the universal significator
The 7th house and its ruler are specific to your chart. Venus is the universal significator of love, beauty, and harmony, so she gets a look no matter what. What sign is she in, what house, and who is she contacting by aspect? (If she’s touching Uranus or Neptune, I have videos on both of those combinations. I’m just saying.)
Example: Venus in Sagittarius may want a freer, more exploratory love, taking that flame out into the world, maybe even an openness to open relationships, because Sagittarius wants to learn and pick things up from other people. Does every Venus in Sagittarius want an open relationship? No. But that Sagittarian freedom colors the Venus. And remember the order of operations: 7th house first, then the ruler, then Venus. (Nothing I share here is exhaustive, keep that in mind.)
The sun, the moon, and their midpoint
The last place I look for romance, beyond the 5th house of pleasure, is the sun and moon and the aspects they make to each other, because sun-moon contacts describe how partnership shows up in our lives.
And here’s a bonus technique: the sun-moon midpoint can describe the profession of your person. Mine says author, so maybe one day I’ll meet a writer and live happily ever after. Just putting that out there if you know anybody. The midpoint also says something about you, and about the relationship between your parents.
On that note, a client of mine had the general significators for her parents in a trine, but the specific significators in a square. Her parents were divorced (the square) yet amicable (the trine). Different testimonies in a chart will contradict each other sometimes, and that’s fine, because life is complicated and we contradict ourselves too. Little nugget for y’all.
