Today we’re talking about the part of your birth chart that’s all about the cash. The bag, the moolah, the Benjamins, the coin. You get it. The second house is where the money resides, and once you know how to read it, your chart will tell you how money comes to you, how it leaves you, and what your relationship with it actually looks like. (Video version here if you’d rather watch.)
What the 2nd house rules
The second house governs resources, material comforts, earnings, and everything concerning wealth: how you attain it, your personal belongings, income, profit and loss, money lent to others, and the support you receive from other people. It’s also, simply, your stuff.
A lot of modern astrologers tie self-worth and values to the second house. I stick with the traditional meanings in my practice, but I can see how people get there, because your ability to earn and keep money is partly tied to how you value yourself.
Fun fact: an awful lot of slang for money is food. Cheddar, cheese, bread, dough, clams, cabbage. Which tracks, because the second house covers the material resources that keep you alive, and food is survival resource number one. No money, survival is hard. No food, survival is very hard. Same house.
The trick nobody tells you: everybody’s money is in your chart
Here’s a major key, so pay attention. Because every house has its own second house counting from itself, your chart doesn’t just show your money. It shows the money of everyone represented in your chart.
The 4th house is the house of the father, so the 5th house (the second house from the 4th) describes your dad’s income. The 7th house is your partner, so the 8th (the second from the 7th) shows your partner’s money. I’ve shown y’all how to find bae in the chart; now you can check what bae’s finances are looking like before you get too invested. Sugar daddy or Splenda daddy? The chart knows.
Planets in the 2nd house: the day-to-day money story
Planets sitting in your second house tell the daily story of your finances. Look at what each planet rules elsewhere in your chart (that shows what influences are flowing into your money), and factor in its general significations.
The Sun brings light to your money, and also heat. It can shine on your income and burn through it at the same time. Mars behaves similarly: you’re passionate, you’re putting in work, you’re getting to the bag, and you’re also running through the bags, spending on everything.
Saturn in the second brings restriction. At its harshest that can mean poverty, but it can also produce someone focused on saving, budgeting, and structure, because structure is the other thing Saturn provides.
Jupiter brings coin, especially by transit. A while back my mom had Jupiter transiting her second house and money was arriving from everywhere at once. We started calling it her money month, and now all her friends want to know when their money month is. (It takes Jupiter years to come around, so: be thankful for what you have.)
Neptune money appears mysteriously and disappears the same way. It runs straight through your fingers and out into the world, destination unknown. The upside is a more spiritual relationship with money, releasing it in trust that it comes back. Neptune can absolutely be delusional about this, but then again, everything seems unrealistic until it’s done.
Uranus makes income sporadic. This is the person who is least likely to be on a salaried every-two-weeks paycheck, and most likely to be freelancing or in the gig economy, which is a very Uranian way to earn: sudden, unpredictable, and not guaranteed to repeat. Since you can’t count on the flow, stewardship of what does come in matters double.
Chiron in the second points to a money wound: something in your money mindset that keeps you from earning what you could be earning. That one deserves its own deep dive.
The ruler of the 2nd house: the big picture
Planets in the house give you the day-to-day. For the overall financial picture, find the ruler: look at the sign on your second house cusp, then find the planet that rules that sign and assess its condition. What sign is it in, and does it like being there? What house is it in? What aspects is it making? Ultimately, the planets living in a house have to answer to the house’s ruler.
Aspects to the ruler matter even when a planet is nowhere near your second house. Neptune conjunct your second house ruler will still pour Neptune into your money situation. Jupiter squaring the ruler brings Jupiter flavor to your finances, friction included.
Here’s how specific this gets. I had a client with her second house cusp in Capricorn, which is ruled by Saturn, and her Saturn was sitting in the 12th house in Scorpio. The 12th is the house of hidden enemies and self-sabotage, so hidden enemies around money was one reading. Then she told me her story: as a kid she was a dedicated saver (a deeply Saturnian habit), stashing her money in a bedroom drawer, until the day she discovered a friend had stolen it. It made her distrustful of people around money and fearful about saving. And in her chart, the planet representing her friends was squared by the ruler of her house of hidden enemies. The chart had been telling that story the whole time: everyone who claims to be a friend isn’t one, and it shaped how she handled money from then on.
Where to go from here
There are other wealth indicators in the chart beyond the second house (the Part of Fortune is a big one, and it deserves its own video), but the second house is the foundation: the money, the stuff, the survival resources, and the story of how you hold them.

Peace, homies.
