Codependency doesn’t come from one placement. It comes from a small group of placements that all produce the same behavior — losing yourself in somebody else — for different underlying reasons. Which is why it’s confusing to spot. You can be codependent through Neptune, or through the Moon in the 7th, or through Libra, and none of those look identical on the outside.
Here’s the working list I go to when I read for it. Sorted by what’s actually driving the codependency, not just what’s in the placement.
Definition first, from the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction: codependency is devoting all your emotional and mental energy to another person at the expense of your own health.
There are two flavors of it in practice. The first is the Jordin Sparks / Chris Brown “No Air” version — I can’t live without this person, I’ll die without them, because I can’t stand on my own two feet. Underneath that: low self-esteem.
The second is more sneaky. It says I don’t think that person can survive without me. So I’ll give and give until there’s nothing left. Also codependency. Different failure mode.
Now the placements.
The confusion mechanism: Neptune
Neptune runs codependency through fog. It erodes the sense of where you end and the other person begins. When boundaries are gone, merger happens, and out the other side you get delusions and disappointment.
Where Neptune drives this: Neptune in the 7th house, Neptune aspecting the ruler of the 7th, and Venus-Neptune anywhere. Venus is the significator for love, and Venus-Neptune is Venus without walls. Same result: no boundary, no exit.
The safety mechanism: Moon or Sun in the 7th
The Moon is where you look for safety. When your Moon lives in the 7th house of partnership, being partnered is what safety feels like. Being alone with yourself feels less safe than being with the devil you don’t know. So the alternative to a bad relationship is not “single and healing.” It’s “unsafe.” Which is why people with this placement stay.
Sun in the 7th does something adjacent — the Sun represents the core self, and if the core self lives in the house of partnership, your identity is what you are inside a couple. Without the couple, less person.
The gravity mechanism: chart ruler in the 7th
Your chart ruler is where you’re pulled. When it’s in the 7th, you’re pulled toward relationships as a lifestyle. You may stay in things past their expiration date because being unpartnered feels like being off-mission.
You also tend to learn about yourself through the relationships you’re in. Which sounds neutral until you notice you can’t remember who you were before the last three people. That’s the drag of chart ruler in the 7th.
The imbalance mechanism: whatever your 7th house ruler is doing
Whatever planet rules your 7th house cusp is the state of your partner in the chart. If Neptune or the Moon is contacting it, see the earlier sections.
If your 7th house ruler is exalted or in domicile — a very strong sign for it — your partner shows up strong in your chart. That’s not automatically bad. But if your own chart ruler isn’t in a great position, the imbalance can read as “you’re lucky to be with them.” You put them on a pedestal. Or, flipped, you leave first because you assume they’ll leave you.
Caveat before the next section: everything I’m saying about the 7th applies to the 5th (love affairs), the 10th (mother/authority), the 4th (father/home), and the 11th (friends and community) too. Codependency isn’t only romantic. Parent-child, friend-friend, coworker-coworker. Any close relationship.
The self-silencing mechanism: Venus-Chiron
Venus-Chiron is somebody who’s afraid that if she says what she needs, the other person will pull away. So she doesn’t. She stays small, agreeable, and quiet. Classic codependent posture, and specifically classic Venus-Chiron.
The commitment mechanism: strong Scorpio
I have Scorpio in the chart. Don’t come for me.
Scorpio is fixed water ruled by Mars. The fixity is what keeps you sitting still. The water is the depth of feeling. Together they produce someone who can take an emotional licking and keep on ticking, for better or worse. Ten toes down.
People say Scorpios are crazy. Scorpios are committed. And I’ve noticed that when people are sent to psychiatric hospitals they say the person was “committed.” There’s something to that.
The mutable water mechanism: strong Pisces
Pisces is porous. It absorbs from the environment whether it wants to or not. Everything feels connected. That “we are one” feeling. Boundlessness.
The Pisces codependency line is: I feel what this person feels. We’re bonded. I have to be there for them, because I’m inside their experience.
The fixer mechanism: strong Virgo
Virgo is earth. Virgo does. Virgo will fix.
The Virgo codependency line is: I have to fix this or it’s going to fall apart. Anxiety attached.
For better or worse, you want a Virgo around. They’ll say the thing everyone else won’t. They’ll also say things nobody needed to hear, because they had to say something. Apply that pattern to any Virgo placement, not just the Sun. If it don’t apply, let it fly.
The mental-connection mechanism: Libra, especially Libra Moon
If you know the signs, you knew Libra was going to be on this list.
Libra Moons are where I see it land hardest, because the Moon is that inner compulsion for safety. Libra is cardinal air ruled by Venus, so there’s a desire to connect, especially through love. Libra people want to be in relationships, point blank period.
I know a Libra Moon person who has never lived alone. I cannot remember the last time she was single. There is just that pull toward togetherness that Libra Moons carry.
Libra’s version is mental more than emotional. There’s more air in the connection. Scorpio is a deep emotional lock; Libra says I need somebody to flirt with, somebody to pour my sweetness onto. Same gravitational field, different atmosphere.
So is everyone codependent
Some version of everyone is a little codependent, because we’re humans and connection matters. Balance is what makes it healthy or unhealthy.
Don’t let it take you under. Martyrdom is not cute on you, boo. Don’t be Captain Save A Ho, Captain Save A Mama, Captain Save A Son. Be there for people. But do not interrupt their spiritual progress by going above and beyond for them every single time. Their life lessons are theirs to learn. With or without you.
If you want to look at where any of these mechanisms are running in your chart and figure out how to work with them instead of getting swallowed by them, book a reading.
